TAKE ME HOME

Recorded: 2012

Label: Syco, Columbia Records

Released: November 9, 2012

Take Me Home is the second studio album by One Direction, released on 9 November 2012 by Sony Music Entertainment. As a follow-up to One Direction’s internationally successful debut album, Up All Night (2011), Take Me Home was written in groups and has an average of just under five songwriters per track. Largely recorded and composed in Sweden during 2012, Savan Kotecha, Rami Yacoub and Carl Falk, who composed One Direction’s hits, “What Makes You Beautiful” and “One Thing”, spent six months in Stockholm developing songs for the album.

Globally, the album topped the charts in more than 35 countries, and was the fourth best-selling album of 2012, selling 4.4 million units. The album’s number-one debut on the US Billboard 200 chart made One Direction the first group to bow atop the Billboard 200 with their first two albums since American girl group Danity Kane entered with ‘Welcome to the Dollhouse’ in 2008 and their self-titled debut in 2006. One Direction also became the second act in 2012 to achieve two number-one albums within a 12-month period, and the first boy band in US chart history to land two number-one albums in a calendar year. Their debut album and Take Me Home were the third and fifth best-selling albums of 2012 in the United States, respectively, making the band the first act to place two albums in the year-end top five in the Nielsen SoundScan era.

The album’s lead single, “Live While We’re Young”, released on 28 September 2012, peaked inside the top ten in almost every country it charted in and recorded the highest one-week opening sales figure for a song by a non-US artist. The subsequent singles, “Little Things” and “Kiss You”, were less successful, although the former topped the UK Singles Chart. To support the release, One Direction performed the album’s songs on several televised programmes and during their worldwide Take Me Home Tour (2013).

Released: November 17, 2014

Recorded: 2014

Label: Syco, Columbia Records

Four (usually stylised as FOUR) is the fourth studio album by English-Irish boy band One Direction, released on 17 November 2014 by Columbia Records and Syco Music. Two singles were released from the album: “Steal My Girl” and “Night Changes”, both achieving platinum status in the US, and scoring the band their tenth and eleventh UK top-ten hits.

The album received generally positive reviews from music critics. It debuted at number one in 18 countries, including the United Kingdom, Australia and the United States. The album is also their last with member Zayn Malik, who announced he was leaving the band on 25 March 2015. As of August 2015, Four became their fourth consecutive record to sell in excess of one million copies in the United States.

On 27 April 2014, it was confirmed that One Direction were working on their fourth studio album. Good Charlotte was reported to have collaborated with band members Liam Payne and Louis Tomlinson for writing songs. McFly members Tom Fletcher, Danny Jones and Dougie Poynter also teamed up with Niall Horan to write for the album. Rock band Kodaline wrote an “unrequited love song” with Harry Styles. Rock band The 1975 were also chosen by One Direction to work on the album. Other people involved in the album include singers John Legend and Emeli Sandé and producer Naughty Boy. Payne claimed that the album would be “edgier” and that the group have written most of the songs for it.

The name and cover of the album were announced on 8 September on One Direction’s official website, along with a free download of a song called “Fireproof”, which was available for 24 hours. Horan stated that the reason for the free download was “because you have supported us so much, we wanted to give a little something back”. “Fireproof” was written by Payne and Tomlinson along with John Ryan, Jamie Scott and Julian Bunetta, who also wrote their single “Story of My Life”. In the 24-hour span, 1.1 million downloads were generated. The song was put on the band’s Vevo on 22 September.

In an interview with Simon Cowell, it was revealed that one of the songs for the album will be titled “18”. The song was written by Ed Sheeran, who also wrote “Little Things” and “Moments” for the group. Niall came up with the name of the album, commemorating the fact that it is the band’s fourth album and that it has been four years since their formation.

“Steal My Girl” was released as the album’s first single on 29 September 2014 worldwide and on 19 October 2014 in the UK. “Night Changes” was then released as the album’s second single on 14 November 2014.

There were five promotional singles released on five different days; when fans pre-ordered the album, they received an instant download of the songs. “Ready to Run” was released as the first promotional single on 6 November. “Where Do Broken Hearts Go” was released as the second promotional single on 10 November. “18” was released as the third promotional single on 11 November. “Girl Almighty” was released as the fourth promotional single on 12 November. “Fool’s Gold” was released as the fifth promotional single on 13 November.

The album quickly rose to the top of the UK Albums Chart, with 142,000 copies sold during its first week. The album scored One Direction their third consecutive number one album. Based on UK sales, it was certified Gold by the BPI in its first week, and certified Platinum in its fourth week.
