  • One Direction’s Drag Me Down breaks global streaming record on Spotify

It was only released four days ago, but One Direction have already broken records with their new single Drag Me Down.

Following its unexpected release on Friday, July 31, the track set a new record for the greatest number of streams over one day on the service, notching up 4.75 million plays globally.

The figure means the band topple previously leader See You Again by Wiz Khalifa ft. Charlie Puth, which clocked 4.26 million streams on April 17, five weeks after its release.

Drag Me Down is said to be One Direction’s most successful single launch ever, topping the iTunes charts in 82 countries and trending for over 10 hours last Friday, with 22,000 tweets about the song being sent every minute.

‘Drag Me Down’ single review by Billboard: 1D becomes larger than life

On one hand, One Direction’s new single “Drag Me Down” offers the “mature” sound that the group members has been boasting about in the lead-up to their fifth studio album. If 2014’s Four found the boys still dabbling in mid-70’s arena-rock, this quick, unfussy track is a graduation to the shimmering pop-rock melodies of the Police and Fleetwood Mac. However, “Drag Me Down” also teeters upon an age-old theme for pop groups: fan appreciation. On its first single without recently departed member Zayn Malik – and its first since its five-year anniversary as a group – One Direction romantically alludes to the diehard Directioners and their place in the group’s phenomenal run of success; it’s basically the Backstreet Boys’ “Larger Than Life” with a slightly less bombastic guitar riff.
Not that that’s a bad thing: the lyrics to “Drag Me Down” coolly encourage enthusiasm and make up for the lack of showy instrumentation with some blazingly ostentatious metaphors. “I got a river for a soul, and baby, you’re a boat,” Harry Style declares unflinchingly on the first verse, while Liam Payne thumps his chest on the chorus with, “All these lights, they can’t blind me/With your love, nobody can drag me down.” The song hums along with a playful back-and-forth between the guitar and bass, and if the hooks aren’t as delectable as they are on the group’s past hits, they at least come close. The best news for One Direction fans is that the quartet does not sound incomplete: the group compensates for Malik’s absence by giving each member ample time to shine, and the harmonies admirably resonate on the call-and-response portions of the pre-chorus.

One Direction is prodding at some intriguing sonic textures here, but they’re far from unrecognizable. For those worried that a four-member incarnation of the group can’t get the job done, “Drag Me Down” assuages those fears by keeping the overall quality level high.

Harry Styles inspires writers of Pixar’s new movie “Inside Out”

In an interesting turn of events, on July 24, the writers at Digital Spy noticed something about the movie Inside Out from Pixar that seemed to be depicting Harry Styles.

Sure enough, it turns out that Inside Out‘s director and producer confirmed that “Harry Styles” was hidden in plain sight in the movie. As it appears, “Inside Riley’s imagination there’s a lanky, shaggy-haired manifestation of her ideal boyfriend.”

Where did the idea to use Harry Styles come from? The director of Inside Out, Pete Docter, has a daughter that adores One Direction — and that gave them some inspiration for using Harry Styles as the imaginary boyfriend of Riley in Inside Out.

Docter says his daughter is “very much a [One Direction] fan.” Adding to that, producer Jonas Rivera said “[Harry Styles is] the greatest hits of what an imaginary boyfriend would look like. We asked a lot of people!”

To create their prototype of Harry Styles for the imaginary boyfriend in Inside Out, Rivera states the fashion they focused on was the hairstyle and “the tight-fitting jeans that are a little bit saggy around the middle.”

    5 years of One Direction

Five years ago on Friday, July 23, at 8:22pm was the birth of one of the world’s biggest bands, One Direction. This entire week has just been a 1D fan fest, with thousands of the band’s admirers tweeting obsessively about the anniversary.

That’s right, it’s been five years since Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson and Niall Horan were put together by Nicole Scherzinger on The X Factor, after failing to get through as soloists at judge’s houses.

Over the last five years, the boy band has released four albums – Up All night, Take Me Home, Midnight Memories and FOUR– all of which debuted at No. 1 on Billboard. In the five years since becoming a band, One Direction has sold over 20 million albums and 30 million songs worldwide.
